What sounds do you make?

I sat on the couch today reading, "Can you ROAR like a lion?" to my 3.5 month old baby boy after a long day of law school, and it got me thinking. I spend nearly all my time reading and discussing what Justice so and so thought about this clause or that amendment. In fact, I have become so accustomed to spending all my time figuring out what other "authorities" say that after several pages of learning the various sounds that jungle animals make, I flipped to the final cardboard enforced page and felt instantly haunted by the closing sentence, "What sounds do you make?"

It struck me that most days I hope very much to make no sounds at all. At least in class. The name of the game there is flying under the radar. But I felt a little ashamed that this has become my goal.

I have thoughts and feelings and opinions, but unfortunately, I find myself too often too eager to suppress those in an effort to keep things calm and moving along. That is unfortunate.

I once had a professor in college that said, "You know what you are passionate about because you can talk to yourself about it all the way home from work and not even care that people stop to stare at you wondering who in the world you are talking to."

Well, I have those subjects in my life that provoke such emotion and interest from me that my thoughts are completely lost in it, and so, in an effort to find my voice and help you do the same, I intend to make my influence felt by expressing some of those opinions on this blog, and I hope that you will do the same.

So dear friends and readers...what sounds do/can/will you make?

  1. Yay for new blogs! I support. You are such a deep thinker, it's fascinating to me. Maybe I think deep like you and just don't realize it. In any case, I'm excited to hear your thoughts. What sounds do I make? Depends on what I just ate. ;)

  2. This is a really interesting thought! I dig it! I too have been one to try to fly under the radar in order to make sure my opinions don't offend or make waves. I have realized through my college experiences that this really isn't the way to go through life happily and it certainly isn't the way to create change in society. When I started voicing my passions, ideas, interests and opinions, I became much more comfortable with myself and excited to do something to enhance society.

    1. Brynn! Thanks for reading my blog. I woke up this morning and saw your comment. It made me so happy. It's funny because last night when I was going to sleep, I thought about your blog, and I wondered if you would take a peek at mine, and sure enough, this morning I have a comment from you!. I guess I struggle most knowing how to give my opinion without fear that there will be negative repercussions, but it has occurred to me that MANY people around me voice their opinion all the time and often it isn't anything that I agree with at all, but I don't mind them sharing...so I might as well share too. I like knowing where people are at and what they think, so I am sure others will feel that way too.

  3. Thanks for the comment on mine :)

I think my ultimate goal recently is to allow for conversations around me to occur that allow for healthy discussion and differing of opinions. One thing that has depressed me in this election cycle is people feeling the need to pit themselves against each other. It would be lovely if we could all voice our opinions and then work together to create a more wonderful society. I know I have a Utopian goal for society, but I just wish that people would, 1. feel comfortable with their opinions and 2. work with others and not get mad if they disagree. In addition, I feel many people don't take the time to form informed opinions, so many people are running around exclaiming things that they really don't understand.

Anyways, I'm babbling at this point, but I really enjoyed this post and the thoughts it provoked. Also, I am trying to work on an articulate way to respond to your second post because it is something I have thought about A LOT, I just want to make sure I clearly state what I want to state!

  4. I obviously agree with the uniformed part of this since my blog post centers on this. I should also probably clarify that my point had nothing to do with the lack of women's rights to contraception etc. More I was meaning just that notwithstanding that and other disparities between the condition of men and women at the time, I was bothered that all the really great contributions women made to society during that era were overlooked by a baseless generalization, and I felt that was unfortunate.

Anyway, I am excited to hear your comment. Two things: I won't get offended with anything that you say. Second, you can always clarify if it seems that I missed what you were trying to get across. Goodness, I have felt the need to clarify just about everything that I have ever said that I really care about.

Also, I love that the comment pool has really become a conversation between us! Huzzah.

  5. I'm glad you mentioned the contraception thing because I almost went off on that tangent and had to stop myself. Ha! Loving these conversations by the way! Also, I am sure I will need to clarify 99% of what I say, one of the things I am working on is making myself clear.
